This guest blog is an excerpt from Leadership In The Trenches: A Road Trip in Reality to Success by David B. Pomeroy
People are smart. If you go into a room of employees and say, “Raise your hand if you need to be managed,” no one will. Why? Because people want leadership, not management. They want to know the vision, mission, and plan. They want to know “Where are we going?”
Knowing this, to be a true leader, it’s important to lead by example and understand management versus leadership. True leadership is being the real sales person, and not just telling people what to do. If the expectation is communicated properly, people will know what to do and how to do it.
Then it’s all about accountability and meeting or exceeding expectations. Too many people in “management positions” with big titles like CEO don’t get that. Then they wonder why they fail. People are smart. They want and crave leadership. With true leadership, they will go the extra mile. They will figure it out and get the job done.
Form over substance, at its heart, is the idea that the appearance of success is more important than real success. You can still take out the trash no matter what your net worth. People can see through a façade in a heartbeat. They’re too smart to be fooled by elaborate titles.
When it comes right down to it, in order to do something, that something must be a verb. I can sell computers, but I can’t “CEO” something. And what, exactly, does managing look like? I challenge you to show me what you do versus what your title is.
